Our travel report from the short cycle tour to Spessart and Main

From our guests Doris and Siegfried

Sometimes it doesn’t take long to truly unwind. Doris and Siegfried chose a short cycling holiday through the Spessart and Main region – a round trip from Würzburg via Gemünden and Marktheidenfeld to Wertheim and back again. Their route leads through Franconian wine country, past historic towns, peaceful river landscapes and charming villages. Following well-developed cycle paths, they explore the region stage by stage, with plenty of time for sightseeing, relaxed breaks and, of course, the occasional glass of Franconian wine.

The short cycle tour along the Spessart and Main was our first cycle tour with Radweg-Reisen and took us from Würzburg to Gemünden, then to Marktheidenfeld and back to Würzburg.

After our arrival, we parked the car at the free Talavera parking lot in Würzburg. Our first destination was the old Main Bridge, where we enjoyed a Viertele on the bridge before cycling to the hotel for check-in.

The next day, we started the first stage along the Main to Gemünden well refreshed. A detour to Veitshöchheim to visit the rococo gardens there was well worthwhile, not least because we spotted the familiar faces of carnival in Franconia at the Haus der Fastnacht.
An inviting beer garden in Himmelstadt encouraged us to take a break, the atmosphere and service were great.
After lunch in the beautiful village of Karlstadt, we arrived in Gemünden just in time for coffee. We were very reassured when we discovered our suitcases at check-in, which had been transported to our hotel in Gemünden by Radweg-Reisen as announced.

The second stage from Gemünden to Marktheidenfeld was a little shorter at around 35 km, so we were able to take several breaks and take a more leisurely approach to the day.
We took the time to visit the castle in Lohr, where the talking mirror from the fairy tale was hanging. Our second destination, Marktheidenfeld, impressed us with its fantastic pedestrian zone and great pubs and beer gardens.

The third and final stage took us back to Würzburg, first again to Bettingen along the Main. We then left the Main Cycle Path and cycled along the Aalbach Cycle Path back to Würzburg, passing through some picturesque villages along the way.
After a tasty refreshment stop in Uettingen, the route continued slightly uphill until we were rewarded for our efforts with a long descent. At the end of our tour, we were rewarded with another Viertele at the old Main bridge.

A recommendable bike tour over 3 stages was over, well organized by Radweg-Reisen.
Many thanks to Radweg-Reisen from Doris and Siegfried
