Fresh wind, high and low tide, screaming seagulls, grazing sheep and the taste of salt in the air – our bike tour on the North Sea coast takes you to the coast of Schleswig-Holstein and leads you in nine days from Esbjerg in Denmark to the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. With an average of 75 kilometers per stage, you will be on our bike tour along the North Sea coast with almost no climbs, mostly not far from or directly on the coast and the Wadden Sea. After you start in Esbjerg, you have the opportunity to visit the island of Fanø. Continue on to Ribe, whose medieval alleys have many stories to tell about Denmark‘s oldest city. Get that island feeling again on the Wadden Sea islands of Mandø and Rømø. Enjoy the peace and nature on the islets before heading to the next highlight of our bike tour on the North Sea coast – the island of Sylt. Explore Sylt on a long or short tour, just as you like. Back on the mainland, you will get to know North Frisia with the towns of Niebüll, Husum and St. Peter-Ording as well as the Dithmarschen region with St. Michaelisdonn and Brunsbüttel on the Kiel Canal. Along the Elbe, our bike tour on the North Sea coast will take you to your destination Hamburg.
Our bike tour on the North Sea coast is particularly suitable for already experienced bike travelers who have a certain level of fitness and can adapt well to the changing weather conditions on the North Sea and its islands.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Esbjerg
Your bike tour begins in Esbjerg, the largest city on the Danish North Sea coast. The port city was established a good 150 years ago. The Vandtårn, a water tower, is one of the landmarks of the city. It was built at the end of the 19th century and offers a magnificent view of the city. Another highlight of Esbjerg is the striking sculpture group Man by the Sea on Sædding Beach. You can learn more about the history of fishing, which once shaped the city, at the Fiskeri- og Søfartmuseet, which is also dedicated to the development of navigation.
Day 2: Esbjerg – Fanø – Ribe, approx. 70 km + ferry trip
At the very beginning of the first stage of your cycling trip along the North Sea coastline, you have the opportunity to make a detour to the island of Fanø. A ferry (not included) will take you to the Wadden Sea island in a few minutes, which awaits you with forests, dunes and a seemingly endless beach. With a little luck, you will discover washed-up amber before heading back to the mainland. Along the coast you will travel to Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark. Unmistakable from afar, Riber Cathedral stretches across the horizon. From one of its disparate towers, Bürgerturm, you have a beautiful view towards the Wadden Sea and the region.
Day 3: Ribe – Island of Mandø – Havneby (Island of Rømø), approx. 75 km + tractor bus
From Ribe you cycle back to the North Sea. If you like, pay a visit to the Island of Mandø. The tidal island is best reached from Vester Vedsted with the Mandøbussen (not included). During the crossing you have a wonderful view of the Wadden Sea. Back on the mainland, the next island is already your destination – Rømø. Via the road dam Rømødæmningen you will cycle to the island known for the largest sandy beach in Northern Europe. Get to know it on a round trip that takes you past Kommandørgården, the whalebone fence and Rømø Kirke. You will spend the night in Havneby, the main town of the island.
Day 4: Havneby – Island of Sylt – Niebüll / Schlüttsiel, approx. 60 / 85 km + ferry and train ride
You'll feel the island vibe on the fourth day of your cycling trip on the North Sea coastline. From Havneby you take the ferry to the Island of Sylt. Treat yourself to a delicious fish roll in List at Germany's northernmost fish stall before exploring the island. A network of bike paths over 200 kilometers long leaves nothing to be desired on a round trip. Whether you are drawn to the Hörnumer lighthouse, the Rantumbecken nature reserve or the cliff coast in Morsum, Sylt offers many sights worth seeing in addition to fantastic landscapes. In Westerland, take the train that will take you to your overnight destination Niebüll. If you stay overnight in Schlüttsiel, there are still a few kilometers ahead of you until you reach your destination for the day.
Day 5: Niebüll – Husum, approx. 90 / 65 km
Let the wind blow around your nose along the North Sea coastline when you reach the causeway to Hamburger Hallig after a few kilometers. By bike it is easy to reach the small peninsula. From there you have a beautiful view over the surrounding Halligen in the Wadden Sea. Back on the mainland, you will cycle along the Beltringharder Koog to the Nordstrand peninsula. Soon you will have reached Husum. Take a walk through the hometown of the writer Theodor Storm with its colorful harbor and its 16th century castle. It is the only castle on the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast.
Day 6: Husum – St. Peter-Ording – Tönning / Lunden, approx. 85 / 90 km
From Husum, the cycling trip along the North Sea coast first takes you to the Eiderstedt peninsula. The red and white striped lighthouse Westerheversand is guaranteed to catch your eye. Probably the most famous lighthouse in Germany, it has a viewing platform from which you have a wonderful view of the surrounding area and the sea. Continue on to St. Peter-Ording, which is known for its 12 kilometer long sandy beach. After a longer break for swimming and sunbathing, you will cycle to Tönning. Worth seeing is the Multimar Wattforum, which informs about life in the Wadden Sea. You will spend the night in Tönning or Lunden.
Day 7: Tönning – St. Michaelisdonn / Brunsbüttel, approx. 65 – 90 km
Along the Eiderwatt and past Germany's largest coastal protection structure, the Eider Barrage, you will cycle relaxed and close to the coast to Büsum, famous for its crabs. Fortify yourself with a delicious crab roll before heading inland to the Dithmarschen region. In Meldorf, it is worth visiting the cathedral, which is designed in the typical North German brick Gothic style. The tour continues to St. Michaelisdonn. The landmark of the place is the Dutch windmill Edda. Spend the night in Brunsbüttel and get to know the Kiel Canal already today.
Day 8: Brunsbüttel – Hamburg, approx. 80 / 105 km
From the Dithmarschen region it goes to the Kiel Canal. It has been in operation since 1895 and is one of the busiest waterways in the world. Watch small and large ships as they impressively pass through the canal locks. Continue along the Elbe River. Take a break in Glückstadt. The Elbe town was once created on the drawing board and is known for its herring specialty, the Glückstädter Matjes. Passing the ship welcoming facility in Wedel, you will reach your destination Hamburg.
