Bike tour to Sylt, Rømø and Hooge

The small town of Husum is very much shaped by the changing tides. The North Sea comes right into Husum's inland port. You can watch the ebb and flow of the tide right from the town itself. Walk through the narrow streets and lanes and admire the pretty, differently painted gabled houses. A lot of restaurants and cafes have established themselves around the harbour. Enjoy the maritime background in the evening and think of what tomorrow holds, when you start your bike tour to Sylt.

The first part of your bike tour to Sylt, Rømø and Hooge takes you along the dyke through North Frisia. You cycle along the North Sea cycle path through many nature reserves and bird sanctuaries. You will almost certainly spot some sheep grazing on the dykes. To your left you'll see the Schleswig-Holstein flats national park and the internationally unique Hallig islands. Enjoy a pause on the dyke to take in the view before you reach today's destination.

Halligen are small marsh islands in the shallows and are completely flood several times every year. Thanks to the dwelling mounds – artificially made higher areas – people can live on the islands all year round. The ferry takes you to Hallig Hooge (not included), the biggest Hallig island in the North Sea. In the cinema dedicated to the storm surges the islands experience, you can find out in a very impressive manner what it's like when the floods come. Enjoy this unique scenery before the ferry takes you back to the mainland.

First you and your bike take the train over the Hindenburgdamm to the Queen of the North Sea: the Island of Sylt. Today, your cycling bike tour to Sylt can be spent entirely as you choose. In the south of the island you'll find Hörnum lighthouse. Sylt is also perfect for a relaxed day at the beach. If you haven't tried a fresh fish roll or a piece of Friesian cake yet, then today's the day! Finally, the ferry takes you to the Danish island of Rømø.

Discover the beauty and tranquility of the southernmost and largest Danish North Sea island. One thing on this very popular holiday island is particularly impressive: the beach! The sandy beach is one of the longest and widest of its kind in Northern Europe – and you can get around it on your bike! You reach the mainland via a dam, which is approx. ten kilometres. Arriving in Tønder, enjoy your evening in the town, admiring its beautifully preserved patrician houses in the baroque and rococo styles.

You leave Denmark along the North Sea coastal cycle path. Just after the border, we can recommend visiting the Emil-Nolde-Museum in Neukirchen. The exhibition provides insight into the life and works of one of the most important expressionist painters. Following quiet roads you cycle past fields and meadows to Niebüll. When we you arrive, try a visit to the natural history museum. It's worth it.

You're now on the last part of your bike tour. You leave Niebüll to head south. If your legs are still feeling perky, you can go for the longer route that takes you via the Nordstrand peninsula. Nordstrand is also where the popular local drink – Pharisäer – was invited. This sweet coffee drink with a good shot of rum tastes best when accompanied with a slice of Friesian cake.
