The Saar Cycle Tour takes you through three countries on wonderfully flat paths: Explore France, Germany and Luxemburg around the tranquil river with its many river bends. Leisurely stages, the culinary specialities of the Alsace region and the delicious Moselle wines set ideal conditions for a wonderfully relaxing cycling holiday. You will begin your bike tour in Strasbourg. The city is not located on the river Saar, but as a UNESCO world heritage site it is the ideal starting point for your tour along the Saar. The Saar Loop is a scenic highlight: Here is almost appears as if the river is changing directions. Near Treves the Saar flows into the Moselle. Don’t forget to take a picture in front of the Porta Nigra, before you cycling towards Luxembourg!

Day 1: Individual arrival in Strasbourg
The city on the French-German border is a UNESCO world heritage sight and offers many cultural highlights: The impressive cathedral is Strasbourg’s landmark and around it you will find countless half-timbered buildings, the charming district La petite France and the bridge Passerelle des Deux Rives. In the evening you will take part in an information meeting about your upcoming Saar bike tour and receive your rental bike (if booked).
Day 2: Strasbourg – Saverne, approx. 50 km
The first stage of your bike tour will take you along the Rhine-Marne Canal. Take a break at the impressive European Parliament. Take in the view of the hilly Alsace region, while cycling through small sleepy villages. The small town Saverne has an impressive castle: Castle Rohan, the Versailles of Alsace, is more than 140 metres long!
Day 3: Saverne – Saarbrücken, approx. 65 km + transfer
Your bike tour will take you through increasingly narrow valleys. There are many locks on your stage, but one is particularly unique: The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane uses a lift to hoist ships up a slope. You will cycle along the Saar Canal until you reach Mittersheim. In the evening, a transfer will take you to Saarbrücken. The Baroque city is located directly on the Saar. In the evening you will have a little time to stroll through the romantic alleys.
Day 4: Saarbrücken – Merzig, approx. 50 km
On this stage you will continuously follow the river on the Saar cycle path. You will make good progress on the well-developed cycle paths – this is what makes an enjoyable bike tour! You will cycle through the former coal mining area and reach the Völklingen Ironworks. The huge industrial complex covers an area of 600 000 m2. The Ironworks are one of the most illustrative examples of German industrial history and were recently added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Your destination is Merzing, home of the Saarland apple wine.
Day 5: Circular tour through the Äppelkischd region, approx. 35 km
The soil is particularly fertile in the hilly landscape around Merzig – this is obvious from the countless fruit trees, which grow here. The Saargau has truly earned the name Äppelkischd (apple crate) with its countless apple trees! You will explore the landscape between the Saar and the French border on this leisurely cycle tour. You will not only marvel at the many fruit trees, but also at the artful border stones at the German-French border.
Day 6: Merzig – Treves, approx. 65 km
On your way to Treves you will cycle past the scenic highlight of your tour: The Saar Loop. Here the river makes a hairpin turn around a mountain ridge and appears to flow backwards! You will have a beautiful view from the Chloef viewpoint, which you will have to get to on foot. Shortly before Treves, the Saar flows into the Moselle and you will finish your stage in the Roman city. The Porta Nigra, the Amphitheatre and the Imperial Baths are only some of Treves' countless highlights.
Day 7: Treves – Luxembourg, approx. 60 km
You will cycle over the Roman bridge to leave Treves and then cycle along the Moselle for a short stretch. You will cross the border to Luxembourg where the river Sauer flows into the Moselle. Cycle over soft picturesque hills and extensive cornfields and enjoy beautiful views. Your last stage will take you through Luxembourg and into its capital city.
Day 8: Individual departure or extension
On day 8 your Saar Cycle Tour along the river Saar and through Luxembourg ends. If you don’t want to leave the cosmopolitan capital of the Grand Duchy yet, we would be happy to extend your stay.
