The Costa Brava hinterland is called Empordà. This is where this mountain bike tour in Spain takes you. The story behind how the fertile countryside of Empordà close to the coast came into existence is very romantic. Legend has it that this Catalan region was born out of the union between a shepherd and a siren who were passionately in love.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Girona

Take the first day of your cycling holiday to explore Girona. The capital town of the province of Girona has a very long history, its roots going back as far as the 12th century. Visit the stately Arabic baths, which combine both Roman and Oriental architectural styles. The historic Gothic cathedral, Santa Maria, is also worth a visit.

Day 2: Girona – Madremanya, approx. 40 km, 540 altitude difference

Just 2 km from the outskirts of Girona is the first attraction of your mountain bike tour: You cycle through the beautiful valley of Saint Daniel, home to the nuns of the Benedictine Abbey there. From here, you encounter a steep incline to Els Àngels, a place of refuge, from where you have fantastic views of Girona. After a longer section downhill, you get to Madremanya.

Day 3: Day Madremanya – Torroella de Montgrí, approx. 60 km, 600 altitude difference

Today's section is pure mountain bike enjoyment. First you cycle south to Cruilles. From there, you cycle uphill to Santa Coloma de Fitor, where you will find an old church, built to a romantic style. You are now in the eastern foothills of the Gavarres mountain range. Now enjoy a downhill ride to Pals. Don't forget to explore the windy little streets of this little town's historic quarter. A bit later you get to the beach at Costa Brava, not far from where the Ter flows into the Mediterranean. Follow the river to today's destination.

Day 4: Torroella de Montgrí – Figueres, approx. 65 km, 540 altitude difference

The day begins with a climb up to the Montgri mountain range. The route partially follows single trails and you soon get to the very lovely L’Escala in the Gulf of Roses. From picturesque L’Escala you cycle inland a little way and then head north. The Roman and Greek ruins of Empúries  cross your path. In the adjacent museum you can find out more! After crossing a river, you arrive in the medieval town of Castelló  d’Empúries, whose Gothic church Basílica  de Santa Maria is its landmark. After you've passed Peralada your climb commences up along the eastern Pyrenees. Your destination today is Figueres, home of Salvador Dalí.

Day 5: Figueres – Girona, approx. 65 km, 780 altitude difference or approx. 45 km + train trip

Your last section by mountain bike takes you through Catalan forests, passing small, simple villages to the river Ter. Once you get to the river, you can either continue along the river to Girona or shorten the section by taking the train (not included).

Day 6: Individual departure or extension of stay

Your mountain bike tour in Catalonia ends after breakfast. We would be happy to extend your holiday in Girona.
