It is a fairly well known fact, that Rügen is Germany's biggest island. On roughly 970 km², you find endless beaches, unspoilt nature and some wonderful architecture in the islands lidos. Rasender Roland (Rolling Roland), the nostalgic narrow gauge railway has excited children since 1895.
However on this Family Cycling Holiday on Rügen you won't just get to know Rügen but Hiddensee island too. The boat trip to the island is an adventure in itself! Once you're there, endless sandy beaches await you; similarly – the lighthouse that dates back to 1888, and the small fishing villages with their thatched cottages.

Cycling Holiday Rügen for Families

Day 1: Individual arrival in Stralsund

The hanseatic town has a lot to offer for children: The Oceanium, for example, will ensure for quite a number of hours of fun! Or do you prefer a visit to the zoo? And then there's the harbour waiting to be explored. The Gorch Fock I is at anchor here and can be visited. And we also recommend a wander through the historic quarter of the town, which was declared a UNESCO Word Heritage Site in 2002.

Day 2: Excursion to Hiddensee Island

Ship Ahoy! The ferry takes you to the car-free island of Hiddensee. It's worth walking to the lighthouse at Dornbush. On clear days, you can see Stralsund and the neighbouring island of Rügen. Or you could go on a trip by horse and carriage! The island is famous for its amber. Why not go searching for some on the beach! In the afternoon, the ferry brings you back to Stralsund.

Day 3: Stralsund – Putbus – Göhren, approx. 50 km + train ride

Today you're heading for Rügen Island! You leave Stralsund via the Rügen Dam and are soon in the midst of unspoiled countryside. Follow the cycle path to Putbus, the youngest town on the island. And then things take an exciting turn... You clamber aboard Rolling Roland, the steam engine narrow gauge railway to Göhren. Maximum speed: 30 km/h! In Göhren you should go and explore the beach right away!

Day 4: A day spent swimming or walking on the Mönchgut

Bathing trunks or hiking boots? Both sound good ‒ a relaxing day at the beach in Göhren: building sand castles, relaxing in a deck-chair, paddling in the sea and eating ice-cream. On the other hand, tranquil Mönchgut with its idyllic fishing villages and unspoiled landscapes that make a strong contrast to the rest of the island of Rügen. The villages here have funny names, for example Groß Zicker and Klein Zicker.

Day 5: Göhren – Sassnitz, approx. 35 km

A wonderful route awaits you today by bike on the Jasmund peninsula. A picnic at Schmachter See Lake, a trip to the hunting lodge at Granitz, Sellin with its beautiful pier and diving capsule and the rope garden in Prora: on your way to Sassnitz the route offers lots of options to take a break from cycling. Your place for the night awaits with a butterfly park, submarine museum and fishing museum.

Day 6: Trip to the chalk cliffs, boat trip or approx. 30 km

Nothing less than Rügen’s landmark is on today's agenda: the chalk cliffs. Through the old beech forests, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you cycle up to Königstuhl. The view here inspired Caspar David Friedrich in the 19th century to his famous painting. Alternatively you can get to the cliffs from the water. A boat tour to Stubbenkammer is an exciting adventure.

Day 7: Sassnitz – Bergen, approx. 25 km

You leave the peninsula and cycle to Bergen. The path takes you between the smaller and larger Jasmund Bodden. On the way you can stop at Nonnensee, a glacial meltwater lake, which many birds use as a stop for a break. A five kilometres long footpath takes you round this shallow lake. Or you can visit Rugard, Bergen's highest point, where the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-tower stands.

Day 8: Bergen – Putbus – Stralsund, train ride or approx. 55 km

Depending on how you feel you can either take the train (not included) or cycle back to Stralsund. Your first stop while cycling will be in Putbus. Visit the romantic palace park. In Altefähr you will be able to see the unique silhouette of the hanseatic town, which features three brick churches, on the horizon. One of them, St. Mary's Church used to be the highest building in the world – at 100 metres tall.

Day 9: Individual departure or extended stay

After breakfast your family cycling holiday on Rügen comes to an end. We are happy to extend your holiday at the Baltic.
