Our cycling holiday on Sicily takes you through the south eastern part of the island. You visit sites of the Greek and Roman past, will be reminded of the great pomp of the old Baroque towns and see gentle hilly countryside bathed in the southern sun. And you are sure to fall for the Mediterranean charm of the entrancing coastal towns such as Vendicari and Marzamemi. Fortify yourself with an espresso sitting in a lively piazza, enjoy a glass of wine or stretch out underneath an olive tree: Dolce Vita on a bike. You will require a basic level of fitness for this tour.

Day 1: Individual arrival in Caltagirone
Caltagirone is a late baroque town of the Val di Noto, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The over 4000 years of history of this area can be seen in many of the important churches here. The upper and lower towns are connected by a wonderful flight of tiled steps. You'll see these tiles here quite a lot. This style of ceramics from Caltagirone is known all over the world - and a popular souvenir.
Day 2: Trip to Piazza Armerina, approx. 35 km + transfer
The day starts with a short trip by car to Piazza Armerina. Here you'll visit the Villa Romana del Casale, which was not revealed until 1950 through an architectural dig. It has beautiful mosaic floors, which are quite unique in their quality and size. Take the opportunity to have a look back at the rambling historic part of the town and its cathedral. You cycle along quiet side roads through peaceful hilly countryside with wonderful views back to Caltagirone.
Day 3: Caltagirone – Modica, approx. 50 km + transfer
Setting off in Caltagirone, you cycle through typically Mediterranean countryside with vineyards and cypresses, heading south. From Vittoria, a transfer takes you to Modica. The town of Monti Iblei, situated on sunny southern slopes, belongs to the Val di Noto World Heritage Sites. The three churches are an important part. While the Santa Maria church remained unfinished, the stairway to the San Pietro church is lined by the apostles. But both are in the shadow of the truly magnificent facade of the 18th century San Giorgio church.
Day 4: Modica – Pozzallo, approx. 35 km
Before you leave Modica, don't forget to try its famous Modica chocolate, which is made to an Aztec recipe. From Modica you pedal gently downhill through olive and carob tree groves. A wonderfully sweet honey is produced by the carob tree. As you cycle along the route you will pass many important necropoles in the Hyblean mountains. Sicily was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and subsequently rebuilt in a late Baroque style. Your destination is the lively coastal town of Pozzallo.
Day 5: Pozzallo – Marzamemi, approx. 55 km
Today's route follows a level road along the sea. You will stop along the route at a viewpoint opposite the island of Correnti. From here you can see where the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean meet. The fishing village of Portopalo di Capo Passero is on your way to Marzameni. Why not spend a few hours of the afternoon in the sun at a very popular bathing area north of the small historic city centre.
Day 6: Marzamemi – Noto, approx. 20 km
Cycling through the Vendicari nature reserve, Sicily's most important marshland, you continue in a northerly direction. Porcupines and pond turtles, flamingos, pelicans and cranes live in this unspoiled landscape. Today's destination is Noto. It is Sicily's most beautiful baroque town and has a lovely townscape of honey-coloured stone, churches pompously decorated with gold ornaments, magnificent monuments and quiet, secluded leafy spaces.
Day 7: Noto – Syracuse, approx. 40 km
The route takes you through what used to be the most powerful town of the ancient world. Many buildings of historic importance have remained intact. The highlights of a tour of the city are the historic town on the island of Ortygia and the archaeological park, with its ruins of Greek and Roman theatres, different temples and sanctuaries. The "Ear of Dionysius", an artificial limestone cave, is particularly famous for its amazing acoustics.
Day 8: Individual departure or extension of stay
After breakfast your cycling holiday on Sicily comes to an end. We would be happy to extend your stay in Syracuse if you wish.
