Cycle tour in Ireland

Day 1: Individual arrival in Galway

Galway is located at the mouth of the Corrib River into the Atlantic. Stroll through the medieval streets and observe the salmon from the Salmon Weir Bridge between April and July which migrate upriver. In Galway, according to a memorial at the Spanish Arch, Christoph Columbus is said to have gotten the tip to sail westwards- instead of discovering the sea route to India he then discovered America.

Day 2: Clonbur – Westport, approx. 60 km + transfer

In the morning, a transfer takes you to Clonbur, from where you start your bike tour. The town is located between the lakes of Lough Mask and Lough Corrib, on the banks of which is located the impressive Ashford Castle. You will then continue cycling northwards along quiet back-roads between green fields with countless grazing sheep. Cycling through the foothills of the Partry Mountains you will have fantastic views on the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Westport – Leenane, approx. 55 km

To start off the day you will cycle between Clew Bay and the mountain of Croagh Patrick. According to legend, St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, fasted on the summit of the mountain for 40 days. You will continue cycling on towards Killary Harbour, Ireland´s only Fjord and the village of Leenane. The panorama of the 15 km long Fjord is dominated by the 814 metre high Mweelrea mountain.

Day 4: Leenane – Clifden, approx. 60 km

Today you will cycle along the longest route of the trip into the heart of Connemara, which is dominated by the picturesque peaks of the Twelve Bens. The castle of Kylemore Abbey is an impressive building which has housed a Benedictine Monastery since 1920. From Claddaghduff you will be able to observe cars driving over the beach to Omey Island at low tide. From here it is not far to Connemara´s in-official capital of Clifden.

Day 5: Cycling-free day in Clifden

After the long route cycled yesterday you have earned a day off! Relax on one of the beaches with white sand and clear, blue water. You can also take the opportunity to tour the picturesque countryside surrounding Clifden on horseback or by foot.

Day 6: Clifden – Aran Islands, approx. 60 km + boat trip

Today you will cycle along the rugged southern coastline of Connemara through boglands and moors typical of the region. To this day turf is still cut here and piled up to dry. In the afternoon you will reach Rossvaeel, from where you will take the ferry to the Aran Islands. IN earlier times, the islands were mainly inhabited by fishermen. Today there are approx. 1.200 inhabitants left on the islands, the majority of which live from tourism.

Day 7: Aran Islands – Galway, approx. 35 km + boat trip and transfer

Take the opportunity today to explore the many remnants of the past on the island, be it the ruins of Early Christian churches or the spectacular Bronze and Iron Age fortresses on the steep cliffs. In the late afternoon you will return to the mainland and will be transferred to Galway. Why not finish off your trip in one of the numerous pubs in Galway?

Day 8: Individual departure or extension of your stay

After breakfast your cycle tour in Ireland unfortunately comes to an end. We would, however, be more than happy to extend your stay in Galway.
