Get to know the distinctive Switzerland on the cycle tour along the Aare Route. The journey begins in Waldshut-Tiengen on the High Rhine. By transfer you will be taken to Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland. Fresh on your bike, you follow the Aare, the longest river within Switzerland. Surrounded by the backdrop of the spectacular Alpine peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the cycle tour along the Aare route begins with a boat trip across Lake Thun. Relax and follow the almost gradient-free course of the Aare, which accompanies you to the federal city of Bern, brings you closer to bilingual Biel, lets you walk in the footsteps of the Baroque in Solothurn and leads you through the moated castle of Switzerland not far from Aarau. The Aare flows into the Rhine at Koblenz. On the cycle tour along the Aare Route, you will enjoy magnificent views of the fascinating Swiss countryside, meet ornate castles and enjoy one or two Swiss delicacies that will delight your palate, some sweet, some savoury.
Your cycle tour along the Aare Route begins in the small double town of Waldshut-Tiengen, not far from the border with Switzerland. After checking in at the hotel, take a walk through the pretty Kaiserstrasse in Waldshut, which was already used to hold markets in the Middle Ages. After you have inspected the Tiengen Stork Tower, it is worth climbing up to the Vitibuck Tower, from whose viewing platform you can see as far as the Alps in good visibility.
After breakfast a mini van will bring you and your bikes to Interlaken. Welcome to Switzerland! Your cycle tour along the Aare Route begins in Interlaken in the middle of the Bernese Oberland. Situated between the Lakes Thun and Brienz, the town was first mentioned in the 12th century when an Augustinian monastery was founded. Interlaken's local mountain is the Harder Kulm. You can climb it by funicular. From a viewing platform you have a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding mountains of the Jungfrau region.
The first leg of your cycle tour along the Aare-Route starts with a boat trip across Lake Thun. After your arrival in Thun, the residential tower of Thun Castle will catch your eye. At 42 metres high, it is the mightiest in Switzerland. After exploring the picturesque old town of Thun, you will head along the Aare to Bern. Historic turrets, small alleys and the astronomical clock of the Zytgloggeturm are worth a longer walk through the dreamy old town of the Swiss federal city.
Continuing along the Aare and Lake Biel, you reach the watchmaking metropolis of Biel. This small town is an excellent place to brush up on your French. French-influenced cafés and restaurants as well as bilingual street signs reflect the fact that you belong to French-speaking Switzerland. Try one of the sparkling white wines grown around Lake Biel and treat yourself to Bieler Bsetzisteine, a sweet speciality of Biel.
The cycle tour along the Aare Route takes you briskly to Solothurn. The small town is considered the most beautiful baroque town in Switzerland. Rich in architectural beauty, the St. Ursen Cathedral in particular stands out, from whose tower you can enjoy an excellent view of the city. The number 11 has a special meaning for Solothurn. In addition to 11 churches and chapels, 11 towers and 11 museums await their visitors. The number 11 is also found in the Solothurn clock. It has an 11-hour dial and plays thethe melody of Solothurn Song with, of course, eleven bells.
Following the course of the Aare you will be cycling through picturesque places like Olten and Schönenwerd before you reach today´s destination, Aarau. The former capital of Switzerland is characterised by a large variety of architectural styles – you will be impressed! The old town center from the 13th century is a real eye-catcher! The Upper Tower is one of Aarau´s landmarks. It is one of the best-preserved medieval towers in Switzerland. Aarau is also known for its ornate gables – it's worth looking up!
Cycling through a landscape of fields and meadows alongside the Aare you will first come to Switzerland's moated castle. The rivers Aare, Reuss and Limmat meet in this spacious river landscape. Take some time to get to know the water town of Brugg. In the Vindonissa Museum you can learn more about the history of Switzerland's only Roman legionary camp, which was located near Brugg. Passing the Aare reservoir, you will meet the Rhine at Koblenz. A stone's throw away is your destination Waldshut-Tiengen.
