From the saddle of your bike and on board the boat you will be exploring the old route of the cargo vessels that sailed to The Netherlands from all over the world. You'll discover the ancient winding streets of those once so important harbour towns. Dignified old estates, small fishing ports and wonderful nature sanctuaries such as the Blauwe Kamer are also on your route. The Amsterdam and Gelderland with Boat and Bike tour in Holland along the Dutch Hanseatic Route has another appealing advantage: almost every day you can choose between a longer or shorter section, depending how much time you would like to spend in the saddle.
You can book the tour on the De Holland with an on-board tour guide.
Meeting point of the river cruiser, De Holland, is the big sundeck. It is fitted with tables and chairs to enjoy pleasant evenings and the play of light on the shore. And if it gets a bit breezy, move to the saloon. It has a lovely bar serving different specialty coffees and other refreshing beverages.
Show more Show lessThe colourful variety of Dutch traditions and international flair in Amsterdam draws many visitors to the city every year from all over the world. Embarkation starts at 14.00, and at around 15.00 the boat departs for Wijk bij Duurstede. From the water you have fine views of the windmills on the dykes – a wonderful welcome from one of Holland's most well-known sights.
While you're having breakfast, the boat takes you to Wageningen. Now that you're fortified, you can set off on your first bike section. The level route through the valley of the Lower Rhine is great for cycling. You soon pass the nature sanctuary De Blauwe Kamer. Small herds of wild ponies live here in this unspoiled piece of countryside. You also go past another nature reserve called Veluwe. Cycling via Zijpendaal you arrive in Arnhem.
The boat takes you to the harbour of the Hanseatic town of Doesburg. Setting off on your bike you follow the Hanseatic Route along the River IJssel. Now you have to decide whether you want to cycle past castles and elegant country estates or whether you want to take the shorter route along the river to the next destination. It doesn't matter which you choose – they are both beautiful.
While you're having your breakfast enjoy sailing on the De Nassau to Wijhe, where you then, feeling refreshed, hop on to your bike. You're now spoilt for choice: The shorter tour takes you along the bank of the river straight to Hattem; the longer route goes through Veluwe, the biggest area of forest land in The Netherlands. With its unspoiled town centre from the 16th-18th century, Hattem is a perfect place to stop for a break. Just a few kilometres further on you reach the Hanseatic town of Zwolle and then follow Yssel to Kampen, the biggest Hanseatic town in The Netherlands.
If you're up for more action, you can take the longer section to Harderwijk. The wonderful coastline of Veluwemeer and the heath at Elspeet line your way. You can also follow the coast to the mouth of the IJssel and then along the so-called Randseen – the lakes that skirt the IJsselmeer – to Elburg. Your destination is the old fishing port of Harderwijk.
Blue or green? That's what you have to ask yourself today. You can cycle along the coastline of the IJsselmeer or explore the forests further inland. Sailors will love Bunschoten-Spakenburg: Lots of old sailing boats are moored here - boats that used to be used for fishing. The place is well known for its traditional costumes, which are exhibited in the Costume Museum Vurhuus.
On the tour on board the De Holland you will stay overnight in Huizen. If you are traveling with the Lena Maria, you will stay overnight in Spankenburg.
Huizen is where you start the last leg of your tour. You cycle past lovely towns such as Naarden with its magnificent fortifications and Muider Castle in Muiden, which rises, almost enchanted, out of the water. You soon reach Amsterdam and have sufficient time to explore this exciting metropolis.
After breakfast your boat and bike trip in Holland along the hanseatic route through Gelderland comes to an end. You will disembark and return home.
