Berlin, Germany’s capital and its largest city, is surrounded by several nature reserves and lakes. Alongside its several sights, the city also hosts countless events. Dive into Berlin’s eventful history and the colourful goings-on on its streets. More quiet days await when you’re cycling through the forest-rich periphery on mostly paved roads in slightly hilly terrain. Why not stop on the lakes’ shores for a break, an opportunity for a quick dip or a picnic. Small villages offer charming red-brick gothic buldings, but other sites along the route, such as the Sachsenhausen memorial site, evidence Germany’s darker past. This bike tour around Berlin shows many a facet.

The Berlin Lakes Bike Tour

Day 1: Individual Arrival in Berlin

Individual journey to Berlin, city of fashion and design, of politics, media and the sciences. Thanks to its cultural variety, the capital is now more popular than ever with travellers from all over the world. In the late afternoon, we’re hosting the information event and will supply you with bikes. Afterwards, there’s enough time for a stroll through Berlin.

Day 2: Berlin – Potsdam, approx. 40 km

On your way out of Berlin, you will come past famous sights such as the government district. Take a look at the Reichstag, with its copula and the Chancellor’s residence vis-a-vis, before cycling to Potsdam. The builder of the Hohenzollern Castle was none other than Frederick the Great, who retreated here during difficult times. Thus its name, Sanssouci – without worries – seems fitting.

Day 3: Potsdam – Brandenburg, approx. 55 km

You will leave the UNESCO world heritage site of Potsdam behind you and cycle to Werder along the river Havel. The blossom town’s centre sits atop an island in the middle of the Havel. Because of the mild climate in the region, this is one of Germany’s largest fruit-growing regions: The whole of Werder blooms in a sea of fruit trees in the spring.

Day 4: Brandenburg – Groß Behnitz / Nauen, approx. 45 km

Alongside Lake Beetz, measuring a total of 18 km, you’ll be cycling in a northerly direction to the Havelland Luch. Extensive farmland, trenches and canals surrounded by poplars and black alders shape this landscape. A stopover in the small town of Ribbeck is a must on this stage – you’ll be able to see the famous Birnbaum and Ribbeck Castle.

Day 5: Groß Behnitz / Nauen – Oranienburg, approx. 60 km

Why not make the first stop on today’s stage in the town of Nauen, famous for its pioneering role in radio technology. Take some time for a stroll through the charming historic centre spared from destruction during WW2. Then, the route will take you along the Havel canals to today’s final destination of Oranienburg. You won’t be able to avoid the radiant white of Brandenburg’s oldest baroque castle.

Day 6: Oranienburg – Berlin, approx. 65 km

Cycling through Barmin wildlife park, today’s first stop is Wandlitz, where the former residences of the GDR government members are located. The wildlife park is shaped by dense forests and several clear lakes and streams. In some bodies of water, one can catch Ciscos – regarded as a delicacy in the region. The Berlin-Usedom cycle path will then take you back to the capital alongside the Shönow Heath.

Day 7: Individual departure or extension of stay

After breakfast, your Berlin bike tour concludes. Why not extend your stay in the metropolis of Berlin, showing its diverse history in most of its corners: It was the capital of the Prussian Kingdom and of the GDR. There are buildings from the 3rd Reich era alongside exhibits from the workers’ movement and revolutions. If you’re visiting the capital for the first time, you mustn’t miss its absolute highlights, such as the Brandenburg Gate or the Victory Column.
